James was born at South Hetton, Co. Durham, England and was the son of John Pringle Purvis and Elizabeth Halliday he had five brothers John Pringle : William : Benjamin : Frank and Charles Thomas and three sisters Jane Robson Sarah Elizabeth and Janet Pringle
